30 Days of Thankfulness - Day 3

Today (should've been yesterday's post) I am thankful for modern medicine.

This almost seems too obvious but I think we often take advantage of the fact that doctors and hospitals are so readily available in the United States. I'm thankful for health insurance and the ease in which I can go to the doctor or hospital.

My dad had 6-bypass surgery a couple years ago and was able to go home after a few days. Prior to this surgery, his doctors did some tests to reveal that he had a "silent" heart attack, requiring the bypass surgery. Without modern medicine and technology, he probably wouldn't have made it very long without that procedure or the doctors who completed the test to reveal he had the heart attack in the first place.

There are still many illnesses and diseases that need cures, so we're not completely living in a perfect world, but to think that only 50 years ago, the first coronary artery bypass surgery was completed. We've made great strides to the type of procedures that can be completed with technology and through scientific research.

Thank goodness for good doctors, nurses, researchers and anyone else involved in advancing medicine.

I can't agree more!!

My dad was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes when he was 5 years old. At that time (in the early 1950's) they told my grandparents he wouldn't live to be 21. Then when he was 21 they said 30... Well, he lived to be 54.

And because of modern medicine my mom has been through multiple bouts with cancer, and came out victorious each time.

I was helping my son understand the other day that some people can't go to the doctor or the hospital when they are hurt or sick. Either because there's not one to go to, or they can't afford it. Its a struggle for me sometimes, even with insurance to cover all the medical bills for my son & I (and his annual trips to the ER) but we make it. I can't imagine what it would be without insurance.

I am thankful for the doctors & researchers that dedicate their lives to making sure ours is better and longer. And am thankful for the opportunity to walk this weekend with JDRF to raise money to find a cure for diabetes.

Thanks for sharing!
